GONGFUCHA – A Search for Harmony in Three Cups
Modern tea art offers a wide range of ways to prepare and enjoy tea. One of them is the traditional southern Chinese method of Gongfucha 工夫茶. In the strict sense, the term refers to the art of skillfully preparing oolong tea in a small teapot and serving it in three — no more, no less — porcelain cups.
In the first part of the workshop, we’ll work together to understand the principles of Gongfucha and try to replicate its rather intricate procedure, designed to bring out the finest aromas of the tea.
In the second part of the workshop, we’ll meet again after a few days. We’ll repeat the steps and discuss how to apply elements of Gongfucha using simpler equipment or different kinds of tea. Finally, we’ll put our knowledge to the test: participants will prepare tea for each other and enjoy their newly acquired skills.
Dr. Sven Schwannberger is a musician and musicologist who has also been a student of Asian tea culture for many years, specializing in Chaozhou Gongfu Cha. He is continually exploring ways to share Asian tea culture respectfully within a European context. His approach to tea and aromatic woods is shaped by a search for common ground between Asian and European histories of thought, as well as a joyful fascination with refined ceramics and the art of understanding fine teas. He regularly prepares tea and teaches about tea culture at various European festivals and event series.
